Since 2018, we have been loving and learning with the John Segrado community.

Why?

  • The people of Mozambique are not flourishing. Malnutrition, disease, illiteracy, sexism, material poverty & corruption are widespread. Of 187 countries, Mozambique is ranked #181 on the human development index.

  • According to Isaiah 58, honoring God includes pursuing human flourishing together, by breaking off the yokes of oppression, injustice and poverty among the nations.

If considered in terms of natural resources, beauty, and human capacity, Mozambique could well be one of the wealthiest countries in the world.

How?

We believe that poverty on the individual, community, and national level is always a result of people believing and living out lies. The solution to breaking the yoke of poverty involves replacing those lies with the lived out truth of God. When people are rooted in a worldview that conforms with reality, reunited with their creator and equipped with practical knowledge, wealth will be created, for individuals and communities. All of this is possible through the transformative work of Jesus.

What?

As a community training center, we are equipping our community with a variety of practical and culturally-appropriate relationally oriented programs. Each program integrates theological truth, vocational skills and educational knowledge.

Currently, our programs include sewing skills, adult education, soccer, conservation agriculture, pastoral training, choir and preschool. We have over 360 regular participants in our programs.

We are also on the cusp of expanding our adult education and preschool program into a neighboring cyclone refugee resettlement community, called Ndeja. We are only waiting for the community center building process to be completed!

Who?

Light for the Hunger was begun by Agostinho and Celina, but has now blossomed into a team of 24 Mozambican followers of Jesus. We are committed to using our giftings and passions to love the John Segrado community with our whole lives.

As our ability to flourish is only achievable through mutuality, we work together to lay hold of it.
