Ladies learning sewing

Ladies learning sewing

Sewing Skills.

In Mozambique, sewing has traditionally been a job sector dominated by men. However, many women in our community asked to be taught how to sew in order to have marketable skills, and also to be able to make repairs to their family’s clothing.

We hired a local tailor who’s heart was stirred by what we were doing and who also had a desire to teach. We currently have 40 men and women in the program, with at least that many on a waiting list.

In order to maximize efficiency of our machines and our teacher, one group of 20 comes in the morning, and the other group of 20 comes in the afternoon.

Our six sewing machines

Our sewing future

While we are so grateful for the 6 machines we have, we would be better able to serve our participants if we have 2 people per machine, rather than 3 or 4. We hope to purchase 10 more machines this year.

In the future, we hope to utilize our sewing program to generate income and provide value to our community by offering reduced cost tailor services. This will also provide a myriad of opportunities for our participants to learn.
